Zombie Loan: The Hand that Writes

Disclaimer: Zombie Loan and all the rest is to PEACH PIT. I was reading Yamato Nase's _Chintsubu no Tsubuyaki_ when I conceived of this idea, so you probably know where this is going. LOL. As Neil Gaiman had said, I don't give you grief over where you get _your_ ideas.

Something has been bugging Tachibana Shito for a while now.

It was just a minor thing--nothing to lose sleep about--but he can't help but think about it, which wasn't going to help anyone any, but still. Shito wasn't the kind of person who let things alone when he could do something about them. There was no excuse for laziness, and trying to avoid something wasn't too cool either. So that day he was eating lunch with Akatsuki and he decided it was the time.

"Ne, Akatsuki."

It took Akatsuki several seconds before he looked up from his plate, a fact that made Shito's feelings veer away from anxious to irritated. He was just starting to tap a finger against the old table when Akatsuki answered.

"Yeah?"

"You're right-handed, right?"

"Good call, Shito. Amazing observation, that," Akatsuki began. Shito braced himself for the rest of it. That was how Akatsuki was: he starts out just fine and ends with a storm. "You've only noticed just now? How long had we been together, man?"

Shito shrugged. "Pretty long."

"Yeah. _Pretty long_. Proves my point to a T, don't you think?" Akatsuki sighed. "What hand holds my katana, didn't you notice?"

Shito repeated his shrug. He didn't really want to go back to the thread-worn argument about friendship and all of that. He'd called Akatsuki by name once, which is once too many, in his opinion. The other boy should be satisfied with that and just shut up.

"What brought that up, anyway?" Akatsuki said.

"Nothing," Shito said, quickly. "I've been thinking, is all."

"Well, call me back when you're starting to make sense again," said Akatsuki, going back to his tempura. "Jeez, try wasting other people's time, why don't you?"

"How many times do you do it, Akatsuki?"

"Do what?"

"The boy thing."

Akatsuki began to choke, but caught himself. "Why would you want to know that, pervert?"

"Well, it's my hand you're using, after all."

"Why the hell would I want to touch _myself_ with _your_ hand, excuse me?"

"Keep your voice down." The other students were starting to look their way. Michiru was frowning a bit, but Koyomi was with her, and Shito noticed that Michiru looked more comfortable whenever she's with the other girl so Michiru wouldn't really worry too much. Not that Michiru didn't like spending time with him and Akatsuki, it was just that she felt more motherly towards the boys and calmer when she's with Koyomi. Shito wished he could feel the same for Akatsuki, but that wasn't going to get him anywhere. Maybe if Akatsuki shut up once in a while, and left him alone for long periods of time, Shito would probably learn to actually like him.

"I'll keep my voice down if you stop being a damned idiot," Akatsuki complained. "And in case you haven't noticed, idiot, _you_ have _my_ hand too."

"That's inconclusive. I'm left-handed."

"Which is _inconclusive_, too, if you think about it." Akatsuki stood up, taking his plate with him.

"Where are you going?" Shito said.

"Away. Before you make me lose my appetite."

Shito doubted anything would actually make Akatsuki lose his monstrous appetite, but he refrained from saying anything about it.

"Ne, Akatsuki," he said, watching the other boy move away.

Akatsuki looked back. He didn't stop walking, but slowed his strides so he wouldn't be too far away to hear what Shito wanted to say.

"Wash your hands after, at least."

Akatsuki had the grace to blush. "Same to you."

Shito looked down at his right hand. Damn Akatsuki for having the last word, anyway.
